Taller Qhapaq was founded in 2008 by master ceramist Julio Quispe Huamán, a fourth-generation potter from the village of Quinua, Ayacucho — Peru's historic ceramics capital. After studying at the Escuela de Bellas Artes in Cusco, Julio opened his own studio to preserve and modernise the ancient pottery traditions of the Andes.
Today, our team of 8 artisans creates everything by hand in our Cusco workshop. We use locally-sourced clay from the Sacred Valley, natural mineral pigments, and a traditional wood-fired kiln alongside modern gas kilns for production work.
Our pieces are sold in galleries in Lima, Buenos Aires, and Barcelona. We also supply tableware to several of Cusco's top restaurants, including establishments on the World's 50 Best Latin America list.
"Hicimos el taller de torno con mi esposa. Julio es un maestro increíble — paciente, divertido, y nos enseñó la historia detrás de cada técnica. Nuestras piezas llegaron a Lima perfectas."
"We bought a set of dinner plates for our restaurant. Each piece is unique, the earthy glazes are gorgeous, and our guests constantly ask where we got them. Julio is a true artist."
"El mejor recuerdo de nuestro viaje a Cusco. El taller de pintura fue perfecto para toda la familia — mis hijos de 8 y 10 años la pasaron increíble. Nos llevamos piezas hechas por nosotros mismos."
